Department for Research into Literary Culture
About
The Department carries out research into literary phenomena in their broad cultural context, primarily focusing on the issues surrounding the sociology of literary communication and lower levels of literature, i.e. 19th and 20th century popular, light and tendentious reading. It was created as of 1.1.2003 with the more long term aim of conceptually establishing and systematically developing research into popular literature and at the same time research into "literary life", i.e. the institutional, cultural and social aspects of literary communication in the Czech lands. Subjects traditionally ascribed to literary history and literary sociology overlap in the Department's work. In addition to literary texts themselves, it also focuses on the communication media of literature (books and the periodical press), institutions mediating and regulating literary communication (publishers and censors), authorship and readership as social phenomena (libraries, literary associations and societies and authors' royalties). The Department's name refers to Polish literary studies and other schools of research on the intersection of literary historiography, the sociology of literature, the history of the book and historical anthropology.
